By configuring your Mac Mail through Bananatag’s SMTP Relay, you can track outgoing emails through Apple's native email client without the need for any additional software.
Setup is simple. To start, you will need a Bananatag account, which is available for free at Bananatag.com.
Once you've created your account, log in to Bananatag and select Account and then Settings from the left hand menu, then click SMTP Relay on the main window:
Note: If you do not have Send Direct set up, you will be prompted to enable it before continuing.
Under the SMTP Relay settings, enter your desired password and select Save New Password.
You'll receive a confirmation (as above) with the correct SMTP settings for your account.
SMTP server: smtp.bananatag.com
Open your Mac Mail Settings by clicking Mail > Preferences, and then under Outgoing Mail Server, choose Edit SMTP Server List:
Add a new Outgoing Server, and under Account Information, enter the Sever Name provided for your Bananatag account in the first step (SMTP server):
Under the Advanced tab make sure the Port matches the information provided through your Bananatag account, and under Authentication, select Password. Then enter your User Name (Bananatag user name) and Password (from your Bananatag SMTP settings), and click OK.
MacOS Sierra users: You will not need to access the Advanced tab as this information is included on the Account Information section with this operating system. You may also need to un-check the "Automatically detect and maintain account settings" to gain access to all required settings.
Note: If "Password" authentication does not work you may need to select "External (TLS client Certification)".
Finally, ensure that the Outgoing Mail Server is set to the Bananatag server you've just configured, and return to your inbox.
Your Mac Mail is now set up with Bananatag, and your sent emails will be automatically tracked. You will receive an email notification when your emails are opened, as well as notifications when any links in your emails are clicked.
For users on a free plan, your first 5 emails each day will be tracked. If you require more daily tags, you can upgrade your Bananatag plan. Alternatively, you can select which emails you’d like to track within your daily limit using by creating and switching between multiple outgoing mail server profiles in your Mac Mail preferences.
