How to track emails with Android Mail using SMTP Relay

By configuring your Android Device's Mail through Bananatag’s SMTP Relay, you can track outgoing emails from your phone or tablet without the need for any additional apps.

Setup is simple. To start, you will need a Bananatag account, which is available for free at



Once you've created have your account, log in to Bananatag and select Account and then Settings from the left hand menu, then click SMTP Relay on the main window:

Note: If you do not have Send Direct set up, you will be prompted to enable it before continuing.

Under the SMTP Relay settings, enter your desired password and select Save New Password.

You'll receive a confirmation (as above) with the correct SMTP settings for your account.

For example:

SMTP server:
Port: 587

Note: The default Android Mail app does not allow you to set up multiple accounts for the same email address. If you are setting up tracking for an email address that you already have set up in the app, you will need to first remove the account through your device settings, and follow the instructions below.


In your Mail Settings, and select Add account, enter your email and password, and then select Manual setup:



Select IMAP account:



Configure your Incoming server settings as usual, and press Next:



On the screen that follows configure your Outgoing server settings, entering the SMTP server provided for your Bananatag account in the first step, select TLS under Security Type, and enter the Port. Under sign-in, enter your User Name (Bananatag user name) and Password (from your Bananatag SMTP settings), and then press Next:



On the final set up page, you may choose to give this account a name that lets you know that emails sent through it will be tracked.


Your Android mail is now set up with Bananatag, and your sent emails will be automatically tracked. You will receive an email notification when your emails are opened, as well as notifications when any links in your emails are clicked.


For users on a free plan, your first 5 emails each day will be tracked. All emails beyond this will not be tracked. If you require more daily tags, you can upgrade your Bananatag plan. More information on SMTP relay in mobile clients can be found on our help center.
